West Bengal to announce textile policy soon

TIRUPUR: Manabendra Mukherjee, Minister for Tourism, Textiles, Small Scale and Micro Industries of West Bengal on Tuesday visited Netaji Apparel Park in New Tirupur and Palladam High Tech Weaving Park.

Interacting with reporters after taking a look around the NIFT-TEA training centre for sewing machine operators in Tirupur, Mr. Mukherjee said that the West Bengal Government would soon announce its textile policy with a lot of incentives to the entrepreneurs.

Noting that Tirupur is one of the major success stories as far as knitwear exports were concerned, he said his interaction with the exporters and visit to the apparel park would definitely help him in formulating the policy.

He said West Bengal has been strong in textile industry with varied products.

The new textile policy aimed at creating one million jobs in the next five years. In West Bengal 1.6 million people were already employed in the textile sector. We have very strong background in textiles, particularly in knitwear, readymade garments, and jute. We are planning to establish 20 apparel parks and a textile township,” Mr. Mukherjee said.

Invites exporters

He invited Tirupur exporters to invest in West Bengal. He interacted with G. Karthikeyan and S. Duraisamy, secretary and vice-president respectively of the Tirupur Exporters’ Association.

“We have expressed our inability in the wake of depreciating dollar against rupee. He invited some of us to put up garment units in the proposed apparel park.

In Tirupur, we are not in a position to run our units at its full production capacity now,” Mr. Karthikeyan said.

Mr. Mukherjee interacted with the faculty and trainees at the training centre for sewing machine operators by the IL&FS.
