Staff Reporter

Unhappy over officials’ replies on release of water to the distributory of canal system

Decisive action: Farmers locking the HLC office demanding release of water to their fields in Anantapur on Tuesday.

ANANTAPUR: The tail-end ayacut farmers of Tungabhadra Right High Level Canal (HLC) from Dimmagudi village of Pedda Vaduguru mandal staged a protest in front of the HLC Superintending Engineer’s office here on Tuesday demanding release of water to their distributory for raising crops this season.

About 100 farmers from the village gathered in front of the office and enquired about their pending request for release of water to the distributory of canal system through which their fields get water.

However, the officials present did not give proper reply to the farmers, who said they had been making rounds of the office seeking release of water for the last four weeks.

Angered by the neglect of the officials, the farmers locked the grill doors of the entrance of the HLC office with a lock which they brought along with them. The farmers stated that they had been raising crops in the ayacut regularly but the neglect of the canal engineers had denied water to them this season.

They raised slogans against the engineers and demanded immediate release of water.

Led by farmers Srinivasa Reddy, Obulakonda Reddy, Rami Reddy Ramakrishna and others they went in a procession to the nearby camp office of the Collector raising slogans demanding water release and submitted a memorandum to Collector N. Sridhar.

The Collector took details from the farmers and assured them to take up the matter with the canal engineers.
