IUML leaders want Taslima Nasreen deported

Staff Reporter

“She is guilty of writing against religion”

Kolkata: Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen’s visa must be revoked and she must be deported from the country, leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) said here on Tuesday.

“Ms. Nasreen has asked her publishers to delete certain portions from her book that are offensive,” said G.M. Banatwala, national president, IUML. “But the matter is not so simple,” he said.

“Ms. Nasreen is guilty of writing against religion and religious leaders…the Government of India must revoke her visa and she must go,” Mr. Banatwala said. “Hers is an assault on the freedom of expression as no one can cross the moral and legal limits [while writing]…India and Indian secularism respects the institution of religion, that is the Indian ethos,” he added.

Mr. Banatwala was in the city as part of a 16-member IUML national delegation that had visited the troubled areas of Nandigram on Monday.

“What happened in Nandigram constitutes an atrocious and unabashed assault on democracy and secularism in our country…we have witnessed signs of the most inhuman atrocities perpetrated by the cadres of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), aided and abetted by the police and state administration,” he said.

“The State government here has outdone the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat…as here the political cadre of the ruling party with all the support of the state machinery is responsible for the acts,” Mr. Banatwala said.

He added that the Central government must consider banning the political cadres of the CPI (M).
