KOLKATA: Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Partha Chatterjee alleged in the House here on Tuesday that Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s telephones were being tapped by the State police under the government’s instructions. He demanded a statement from Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Speaker H.A. Halim said he would ask Mr. Bhattacharjee to look into the matter. Mr. Chatterjee said a certain police official was responsible for the tapping which was being done in order to monitor the activities of Ms. Banerjee and other Opposition leaders who were “under surveillance.” Later, speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Chatterjee said the Trinamool Congress leadership had earlier informed the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister that Ms. Banerjee’s telephones were being tapped. “We demand that the concerned police official be summoned and action taken against him,” he said adding that his party had definite information that the person concerned had his office in Bhabani Bhavan [the headquarters of the State’s Criminal Investigation Department].”
