FIGHTING WIN: P. Kashyap recovered from an early shock to beat a spirited Jishnu Sanyal.

BANGALORE: The top two seeds, P. Kashyap of Andhra Pradesh and Anand Pawar of Maharashtra, set up a title clash with contrasting wins in the men’s singles semifinals of the Canara Bank all-India senior badminton championship at the KBA courts here on Tuesday.

Kashyap recovered from an early shock to beat a spirited Jishnu Sanyal 18-21, 21-8, 21-13, while Pawar powered his way to an emphatic 21-16, 21-14 victory over another dark horse, Sagar Chopda.

The clash between Kashyap and Sanyal had some absorbing moments. Sanyal, who packed quite a punch with half smashes, ran his rival close in the first game and stopped him at 18 as Kashyap dithered at the net.

Bouncing back

But Kashyap came roaring back into the match with telling smashes and well-judged placements to leave Sanyal clueless in the second game. Sanyal was simply left stranded as Kashyap rained winners to run away with the game at 21-8.

In the decider too, Kashyap kept his charge though Sanyal cut the deficit to 10-13. Later a spate of unforced errors ended Sanyal’s hopes of a comeback.

In control

Pawar was always in charge against Chopda, though the latter kept abreast with him for a while. But Pawar, a semifinalist at the Scottish Open a fortnight ago, showed his class to author a convincing win.

The women’s singles semifinals went on predictable lines as top-seeded Trupti Murgunde, playing with controlled aggression, put paid to Gayatri Vartak’s chances and won 21-17, 21-8. Gayatri, despite a strong showing in the first game, faded away in the second.

Local lass Ashwini Ponnappa’s fine run was cut down by a technically superior second seed, Aditi Mutatkar of Maharashtra who won 21-12, 21-16.

Aparna-Jyotsna win

The top-seeded duo of Aparna Balan (Kerala) and P. Jyotsna (AP) bagged the women’s doubles title beating the Karnataka pair of Ruth Misha and Saumya Padhye 21-18, 21-15.

In the men’s doubles final on Wednesday, the top pair of Sanave Thomas (Kerala) and Rupesh Kumar (PSPB) will meet Akshay Dewalkar (Air-India) and V. Diju (Kerala).

The results (semifinals):

Men’s singles: Anand Pawar (AI) bt Sagar Chopda (Mah) 21-16, 21-14; P. Kashyap (AP) bt Jishnu Sanyal (Mah) 18-21, 21-8, 21-13.

Men’s doubles: Akshay Dewalkar (AI) & V. Diju (Ker) bt Jayan James & T. Dinesh (AP) 21-16, 17-21, 21-13; Sanave Thomas (Ker) & Rupesh Kumar (PSPB) w/o Utsav Misra (AI) & Ram Vijay (Ker).

Women’s singles: Trupti Murgunde (PSPB) bt Gayatri Varatak (Mah) 21-17, 21-8; Aditi Mutatkar (Mah) bt Ashwini Ponnappa (Kar) 21-12, 21-16.
