NEW DELHI: The 70-year-old wife of an Italy-based businessman was found murdered under mysterious circumstances in her posh Greater Kailash Part-I residence here on Wednesday. The police are not yet clear about the motive. The murder of Nishi Banga, who lived on the first floor of her two-storey building in N-Block, came to light after her domestic help Kalu alerted her tenants when there was no response to his repeated knocks at the door around 7 a.m. The tenants living on the ground floor, who are reporters with an English television news channel, informed the police thinking that something was amiss. The police entered the house and found Ms. Banga’s body lying on the bed with her hands and legs tied. On examination, they noticed ligature marks around the neck suggesting that she had been strangled. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Anil Shukla said though there was ransacking of the house, most of the jewellery was found intact. The rear-entry to the house was found ajar, suggesting that the culprit (s) gained entry from there. Enquiries from the neighbours, some of who are related to the deceased, revealed that Ms. Banga, a retired NCERT employee, was last seen alive around 7-30 p.m. on Tuesday taking a walk. From them, the police have learnt that two technicians of a refrigerator company had visited her around 4 p.m. on Tuesday to repair her fridge. They are trying to trace the technicians. As some construction activity is going on in the vicinity, the police are also trying to find out if any worker was involved in the incident. Over two dozen labourers working on the construction sites have been rounded up by the police for interrogation. They are preparing a list of those who frequented Ms. Banga’s house. Domestic help Kalu, who worked on a part-time basis, has also been questioned. Ms. Banga’s neighbour Ramesh, who was among the first to reach the spot after news of her murder spread, said she was a religious and kind woman. Her husband Harbans Lal Banga and sons Vikas and Vishal live in Italy and they are into handicrafts business. Area residents told the police that Mr. Banga had settled in Italy many years ago. He was expected to arrive on Wednesday night. While a case has been registered at the Greater Kailash police station, the post-mortem would be conducted in the presence of Mr. Banga at the AIIMS on Thursday.
