Exploring the truth behind creation

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: History Channel’s brand new series “The Universe” will recreate the exact moment when it all began.

Bringing distant planets and faraway stars up close, the series will also give viewers a chance to gaze at black holes and comets. It makes an attempt to unravel the mystery behind mankind’s evolution and recreates the amazing moment when everything started.

Expert views

Speaking after the screening of one of the episodes of “The Universe” here recently, astrophysicist and eminent scientist Yash Pal said the series will help people understand the basic concepts about our only home -- the earth. “This will also encourage students to indulge themselves in the studies related to cosmology or astrophysics. The human civilisation has seen a long clash between astronomy and religion. There was a time when religious heads handled cosmology and scientific facts were not considered. But with the passage of time and foray of science into the common man’s life, cosmology has come up in a big way. People now are focused on knowing the truth.”

Interesting subject

Stating that the interest in cosmology comes naturally to all humans, Prof. Yash Pal said it was tempting to make some spectacular looking programmes but they need to be tempered with understanding. “Any understanding in this area would be welcomed by the audience. We should make it clear, as attempted in this programme, that cosmology has now become a serious part of basic science and astronomy. Lot of information and data are at play in the same yard.”

The two hour special episode titled “The Universe: Beyond the Big Bang” that was aired on Wednesday showed how it all began inside a violent, blinding explosion that threw everything into chaos. It also looked at the greatest thinkers who peered into the chaos in search of order.
