The Greek ‘tragedy’

Staff Reporter

Less resources and small market hamper the industry, lament filmmakers

Lovers of cinema: Greek filmmakers Thophilos Papastlylianos and Dimitris Apostolou and Anand Subramaniam, from Bangalore, address a press meet at IFFK in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Paucity of funds is a major challenge faced by good cinema across the world, according to young Greek filmmakers Thophilos Papastlylianos and Dimitris Apostolou.

Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the International Film Festival of Kerala on Wednesday they conceded that many filmmakers in Greece were being forced to produce video films because of financial constraints. “On many occasions it is a one-man show. We have to script the film, mobilise funds, direct, edit, market and sometimes even act in it. This often distracts the filmmakers who actually should focus on making a good film. There are not many film producers in Greece. The government sometimes extends finance, but often it will be inadequate,” they said.

In the US or India, there are good producers and a big market. NowIndian films are acclaimed in international market. “But Greece is a small country, and we have only miniscule resources and market for such films,” they said.

Mr. Apostolou said he made films as a means of self-expression. Mr. Papastlylianos conceded that the success of the film-maker often depended on networking also. “It is 50 per cent talent and 50 per cent networking,” he lists the figures. Anand Subramanian, a film maker from Bangalore was also present.

‘Chitranjali’ a film publication by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation was released on the occasion by actor Murali by giving a copy to film director T.V. Chandran.

Director Lenin Rajendran who is the Chief Editor of the publication was present on the occasion
