Worker killed in accident at quarry

TAMBARAM: A 47-year-old man was killed and four others were injured when rocks fell on a group of workers at a stone quarry in Tiruneermalai near Pallavaram on Tuesday evening.

The Shankar Nagar police, who are investigating, identified the victim as Anbu of Ariyalur district. The police said blasting of rocks in the stone quarry ended at around 4 p.m. Anbu, along with four other men, was engaged in loading huge chunks of rocks onto a lorry when pieces of rock fell on them from a height of about 100 feet.

Anbu, who was perched on top of the lorry, was injured along with four others – Murugavel (26) of Tambaram, Muthukrishnan (45) of Tirunelveli district, Sakthivel (27) of Ariyalur, and John (23) of Anakaputhur.

The five men were rushed to a private hospital in Tambaram where Anbu was pronounced dead on arrival.

Youth succumbs

A 19-year-old youth died in the Government General Hospital here on Tuesday where he was admitted after suffering serious head injuries when the two-wheeler he was riding collided with another vehicle near Egmore Court.

Police said that when the victim, Imran Shariff of Perambur, rammed another two-wheeler coming in the opposite direction. He was rushed to the hospital in serious condition, where he succumbed to injuries.

Worker dies

A construction worker died on-the-spot after a large concrete slab fell on his head on the site he was working on Tuesday.

Police said that Samikannu (40) of Periyar Street, Sri Devi Nagar, was working at a construction site in Tiruvalluvar Street. During the demolition of a portion of the building, a slab fell on him. He was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.
