Demonstrations planned against wrong portrayal of disabled in films

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: The Villupuram District Physically Handicapped Social Welfare Association has taken strong exception to “wrong portrayal” of the differently-abled in Tamil movies. The association adopted a resolution at its general body meeting held here recently condemning such a trend.

Association president M. Ramesh said that a particular movie had certain objectionable references to physically challenged persons, depicting them as if unfit for family life.

In another movie, the hero was pretending to be physically challenged to earn the sympathy of the heroine. And in yet another movie, a physically challenged person was made the villain.

The association would stage demonstrations in front of cinema houses that were screening such films. Mr. Ramesh said that though the Centre was making budgetary allocations for the welfare of the physically challenged, the benefits were not reaching the target group.

As regards Tamil Nadu, loans were being processed through cooperative banks.

Every year, the banks were receiving thousands of applications and since they insisted on producing auditor’s report, income tax and doctor’s certificates, each applicant would have to spend Rs. 5,000. But majority of the applications were rejected. The District Disabled Rehabilitation Office offered a grant of Rs. 2,000 on bank loans, but the banks were shunning the applications raising doubts over the capability of the applicants to get good returns on investments.
