Multi-colour logo of OPGC unveiled State to fully harness its hydro resources BHUBANESWAR: Orissa is eyeing at generating 40,000 mw in next five years. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the unveiling ceremony of new corporate identity of the Orissa Power Generation Corporation (OPGC), Energy Minister Surya Narayan Patro said as many as 34 companies had evinced interest to put up power plants during the next five years. The State government had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with 13 independent power producers for generation of 15,000 mw. These projects were at different stages of implementation. ‘No shortage’There would be no power shortage in the State as the current level power generation was adequate to meet both domestic as well as industrial demands, Mr. Patro said. On expansion of IB Valley Project, jointly promoted by the OPGC and the US-based AES Corporation, the Minister said a task force that was constituted to look into various aspects of the problem being faced had already submitted its report. “We will soon take a decision on recommendations forwarded by the task force. We are looking for a power generation of 1,200 mw from the IB Valley project,” he said. At present, two units, with a capacity of 210 mw each, were operating in IB Valley in Orissa’s Jharsuguda district. Less consumptionTalking on a similar line, Energy Secretary U.P. Singh said the State government was trying to fully harness its hydro resources by producing 7,000 million units of power. “We are power surplus not due to high generation but because of less consumption. Less than 25 per cent of households possess electricity connection,” he said. The concept of the multi-colour logo, unveiled by Mr. Patro, emerges from the Sun – the ultimate source of energy. The two merging colours of red and orange reflect the interplay of the elements of energy and vibrancy in perfect harmony, OPGC said. OPGC Managing Director Vivekananda Biswal said the new corporate identity symbolised the company’s commitment for continuous progress and vision of making it a world-class organisation in the days to come.
