Traffic flow isn’t that smooth on this narrow road to the beach through the Gopalpur town, especially during tourist season and holidays. —

BERHAMPUR: The Berhampur Development Authority (BDA) has proposed a new by-pass road to the beach at the Gopalpur beach resort.

The BDA has also decided to build a wall to protect the one-km stretch of the beach frequented by tourists from continuing threat of erosion at the beach resort with the help of the State Tourism Department.

The existing road to the beach at Gopalpur has become too narrow and it usually gives rise to extreme traffic congestions. In the past, during the celebration of the Gopalpur beach festival, traffic congestions on this patch of road resulted in tourists getting stranded for hours at Gopalpur during night. An alternative road to the beach was the need of the hour.

Guard wall

BDA Chairman Sarat Ranjan Patnaik said they had already submitted a proposal to this effect to the government. It would be built at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.88 crores. Along with this, the beach road would also be widened and developed.

Mr. Patnaik said the construction of the wall would cost some Rs. 10.40 crores. This would be on the lines of the advanced guard wall built on the Puducherry coast.

The wall would also consist of wave breakers to protect the constructions on the beach from erosion. Special lighting arrangement would be made on the guard wall to make it look attractive. The BDA had already submitted its plan to the Tourism Department as the project would be taken up as a joint venture.
