BERHAMPUR: A workshop was held here on Wednesday to discuss about measure to be taken to ensure farmers got proper price for paddy during the procurement process in Ganjam district. Tehsildars, block development officers (BDO), representatives of paddy procurement agencies like NAFED, MRKFED, FCI and officials from the Directorate of Quality Control attended. Recently, the Rushikulya Rayat Mahasbha, a farmers’ organisation of the district, alleged irregularities in paddy procurement process in the district. GradingOfficials directed procurement agencies to collect good quality paddy from farmers and assess it as Grade-A. Earlier, the procurement agencies used to term all paddy collected from the district as that general class. This was irking farmers as the similar breed of paddy was being termed Grade-A in adjoining Andhra Pradesh. Officials were directed to take steps to avoid any type of distress sale in the district, said Sangram Panda, Berhampur tehsildar.
