Insurance to cover summer crops also

Belgaum: The Government has extended the National Crop Insurance scheme for the financial year 2007-08. It will cover summer crops also.

According to sources here on Wednesday, the scheme, introduced by the Union Government in 2000, will be implemented at the hobli levels and for fixed crops.

The hoblis of Athani, Kagwad, Anantpur and Telsang of Athani taluk; Bailhongal, Kittur, Nesargi of Bailhongal taluk; Belgaum, Hirebagewadi, Kakti and Uchagaon of Belgaum taluk; Chikkodi, Nagarmunoli, Nipani and Sadalga of Chikodi taluk; Gokak, Arabhavi and Koujalgi; Hukkeri, Sankeshwar and Yamkanmardi in Hukkeri taluk; Kudachi and Raibag of Raibag taluk; K. Chandargi, Katkol, Mudakavi and Sureban of Ramdurg taluk; Munavalli Murgod, Saundatti and Yergatti of Saundatti taluk will be covered under the scheme. The summer crops to be covered are sunflower (irrigated) in Athani and Kagwad hoblis of Athani taluk, groundnut (irrigated) of Bailhongal hobli; Katkol, Mudakavi and Sureban hoblis of Ramdurg and Munavalli, Murgod, Saundatti and Yergatti hoblis of Saundatti taluk.

The insurance benefit will be extended to farmers suffering losses due to natural calamities and failure of crops due to pest attacks and diseases.
