BELLARY: The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KUWSSB), which supplies drinking water to Bellary city, is gearing up to overcome water shortage during summer. It has forwarded a Rs. 27.75-lakh proposal to the City Municipal Corporation to undertake emergency work on storage of raw water in the impounding reservoirs at Allipur and Moka. Installing two new 45 hp submersible pumpsets, repair and replacement of rotating elements of existing pumpsets, repair of air-circuit breakers panel, and erecting sand bunds to augment water, are among the work sought to be taken up. StorageWater, drawn from the Tungabhadra high level canal (HLC) and low level canal (LLC), is being stored at Allipur and Moka reservoirs respectively. This year, the HLC will be closed on January 10, while the LLC will be closed in April 2008. As such, arrangements would have to be made to augment water supply in both the reservoirs, till the canals are opened again next year. When the canals are closed, bunds, using sand bags, would be laid across them to prevent water from flowing further. The water stored would be pumped regularly into the reservoirs.
