BIDAR: Narsinghrao Suryvanshi, MP, has called upon teachers to make the midday meal scheme a success in the district. Inaugurating a programme to celebrate Teachers’ Day and “guruvandana” here on Wednesday, Mr. Suryavanshi pointed out that the scheme had not been implemented properly in some areas of the district. Both teaching and feeding the poor students should go hand in hand, he said. Mr. Suryavanshi said the midday meal scheme was launched to encourage students to join schools. This should be achieved, he said and appealed to teachers to be sincere in the implementation of the scheme. The MP said that Teachers’ Day was being celebrated rather late in the district and had thereby lost its significance. He asked the officials not to repeat it, and hold the function on September 5 next year. He said the education system needed some changes to make students more competitive. Mr. Suryavanshi said teachers had a greater responsibility in moulding children into responsible citizens, and primary education was the basis for this. Arshed Ali, MLC, regretted that the performance of students in both pre-university and SSLC examinations was poor in the district. Teachers should strive to impart quality education and increase the pass percentage, he added. Mr. Ali said teachers should get due respect in society for taking up the responsibility of moulding the citizens of the future. At the function, awards were presented to best teachers in the district, both at the primary and high school levels. Retired teachers were felicitated. Zilla panchayat president Jayasheela Reddy; vice-president Rajshekar Patil; Deputy Director of Public Instruction Devanand and other officials were present.
