Couple ties the knot at a simple ceremony in Chitradurga

Simplicity personified: Mahalingappa and Anita, who became man and wife, exchanging garlands in Chitradurga on Wednesday.

Chitradurga: Generally, marriages are conducted either in halls or on the premises of religious institutions, but a couple, breaking the convention, chose to tie the knot at the district working journalists’ association office here on Wednesday.

The couple, Mahalingappa and Anita, said they wanted their wedding to be simple. The event, which was attended by the parents of the couple, a few close relatives and presspersons, was a simple affair with the two just exchanging garlands.

Mr. Mahalingappa, son of a retired high school teacher and a farmer, said he did not believe in lavish marriages. “Though I respect our traditions, I feel that arranging a marriage in accordance with them would mean heavy expenditure. Thus, I decided to conduct mine in a different way.” His father H.M. Veerappa was highly appreciative of the fact that his son wanted a simple ceremony. “All through my career, I not only believed in simple living, but always taught my students to do so. I am very proud that my son practises values which we cherish,” he said.

Asked why he did not feel the need to organise a traditional wedding, Mr. Veerappa said traditions were important, but the will to live harmoniously superseded them. If this ideal was given prominence, rituals would not matter much,” he said.

Ms. Anita said that she, like other women, wanted to have a traditional marriage, but was convinced on the need for simple living. The whole exercise cost just Rs. 5,000, Mr. Mahalingappa said.
