Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Pathanamthitta District Collector to employ sufficient number of persons for removing waste that have started piling up in Sabarimala and Pampa. The Bench comprising Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice T.R. Ramachandran Nair said the reason given by the Collector for not removing the waste was not satisfactory. The court was informed that as the pilgrims had pitched tents and were sleeping on the floors, garbage could not be removed. The government told the Bench that a contingent of five platoons of police were sent to Sabarimala to control the crowd. One of the reasons for crowding of pilgrims in Sabarimala was the acute shortage of Aravana. The pilgrims had to remain in Sabarimala for hours together for buying Aravana. The Special Commissioner had reported to the court that the police deployed at Sabarimala and Pampa were inadequate to control the heavy rush of pilgrims. The government pleader informed the court that adequate arrangements had been made by the police for ensuring the safety of pilgrims at Sabarimala and Pampa. The court also ordered that steps be taken to see that no inconvenience was caused to the physically handicapped persons, women and children.
