RWAs to oppose new power tariff plan

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Residents’ Welfare Associations in the Capital have decided to oppose the multi-year tariff proposal mooted by the Delhi Electric Regulatory Commission.

The United RWAs Joint Action (URJA) zonal representatives met last week and have asked RWAs across the city to file their objections to the proposal with the DERC by December 20 -- the new last date for submission of objections after a five-day extension granted by the DERC.

“There is no question of any agreement by any consumer in Delhi to this proposal by the DERC,” said Ashok Prabhakar of the Malviya Nagar RWAs Federation.

URJA members claimed that RWAs have made repeated requests to the Delhi Government and the DERC for an independent audit of the performance of the discoms.

“We have written to the URJA network of over 750 RWAs across Delhi and given them points based on which they can oppose this proposal,” said Varinder Arora of People’s Action.

Cut in tariff sought

The RWAs have sought a cut in tariffs based on the claim that the discoms have made huge profits in the past five years.

Sanjay Kaul, president of People’s Action, said: “Any way we look at it, the multi-year tariff proposal is a frightening example of how business cartels have acquired total control of government, policy and regulator all in one go.” “How can we allow a regulator to fix another lucrative deal for these private companies,” added Mr. Kaul.
