HYDERABAD: The Public Accounts Committee has constituted a sub-committee of the members to inspect the irrigation projects which were mentioned in the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report for the past few years. At a meeting chaired by Yanamala Ramakrishnudu (TDP) on Wednesday, members felt that an on-the-spot inspection of the irrigation projects, which found adverse mention in the CAG reports, was necessary. Accordingly, the committee decided to tour Krishna and Guntur districts from December 17. The panel members also decided to tour other districts to take a look at the completed projects and also those under construction. The committee, while discussing the Telugu Ganga project works, found that an excess payment to the tune of Rs. 15 crore had been made to the contractors. Sources said that the Srikalahasti MLA S.C.V Naidu (Congress) pointed out that irrigation department officials had made payments to the contractors for the works that were not required. He reportedly pointed out that 2.24 lakh acres of agriculture land was brought under irrigation. But, of this, 12,000 acres falling under the Telugu Ganga ayacut had been alienated to the Special Economic Zone coming up near Satyaveedu mandal. Members said that the government should recover the excess payment and take action against the erring officials. They said that final payments should not be made until the ayacut committees issued no-objection certificates to the contractors that they had completed the works.
