Delhi Metro, bus corridor to provide inter-connectivity

Staff Reporter

Sheila Dikshit directs DMRC, RITES to cooperate

Construction of bus corridor from Ambedkar Nagar to Defence Colony reviewed

“Points of conflict over only a 700-metre section of the 15 km bus corridor”

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday directed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation that is executing the Delhi Metro project and RITES that is carrying out the Delhi Bus Rapid Transit System Corridor to work in complete coordination so that the ultimate objective of inter-operability of the two transport systems could be achieved for the benefit of the commuters.

Ms. Dikshit, who reviewed construction of the bus corridor from Ambedkar Nagar to Defence Colony along with DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan, RITES Group General Manager Colonel Bhasin and Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta among others, also discussed the issue of the alignment of the Delhi Metro and the bus corridor.

Mr. Sreedharan assured that the DMRC will do everything to ensure that there was no problem to the bus corridor due to the Metro construction and suitable adjustments would be made to the effect. He also pointed out that the points of conflict were over only a 700 metres section of the 15 km bus corridor.

Incidentally, the major problem area is the inter-section at Lajpat Nagar where the Metro project has to pass over the crossing. Since work here would temporarily make the bus stop at Lajpat Nagar dysfunctional for a period of 12 to 15 months as the DMRC would be deploying heavy machinery here, Mr. Sreedharan assured that he would speed up the work so that the period of disruption could be minimised.

A presentation was also made by the DMRC and the RITES. The Central Secretariat to Badarpur Metro line is to be completed before the Commonwealth Games in 2010 whereas Ambedkar Nagar to Defence Colony Bus Rapid Transit Corridor is to be completed by April 2008.
