MALAPPURAM: A 35-member panel, suggested by the outgoing district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), won the elections held to the party district committee here on Wednesday. K. Ummer was unanimously named district secretary of the party replacing the outgoing secretary K. Saidalikutty. Briefing the media soon after the election proceedings on the final day of the party district conference which began on Monday, CPI(M) leaders T.K. Hamza, Paloli Kunhimohammed and E.N. Mohandas said the election was held in a healthy manner. They denied reports of dissident and anti-party activities. A. Sivadasan and M.P. Alavi, who contested challenging the panel put forth by the outgoing committee, were defeated. However, no election was held to the secretary’s post, said Mr. Hamza.
