ALL HELP: Dick Brouwer
KARUR: Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) could benefit immensely from technical expertise of senior Dutch professionals in a spectrum of sectors from agriculture to engineering.
The Netherlands-based organisation PUM would facilitate consultancy services by retired Dutch professionals on sector-specific requests from Indian SMEs or cluster of industries, PUM Country Coordinator for India South Dick Brouwer has said.
In an exclusive chat with The Hindu here, Mr. Brouwer said PUM’s pool of experts ranged from agriculture and animal husbandry to engineering and health care.
PUM experts do not charge for service.
PUM facilitates field visits of retired professionals based on initiatives from Indian entrepreneurs who could immensely benefit from their years of experience.
They provide valuable inputs on capacity-building and fine-tuning the progress of the applicant units, Mr. Brouwer observed.
Experts also carry out follow-up activities based on the requests of the entrepreneurs.
PUM also organised seminars and workshops in collaboration with interested industrial organisations, he added.
Established in 1978, PUM is financially supported by the Dutch Government and the largest Dutch employers’ organisation VNO-VCW. PUM has over 4,000 experts and over 2,000 projects were done in 80 countries last year.
At least 10 per cent of the missions were to India. Interestingly, in the past decade PUM has undertaken over 600 missions in the country.
The missions have helped units involved in sectors such as engineering, food processing, agriculture, health care, hospitality industry, textiles and pollution control technology.
Mr. Brouwer held discussions with PUM beneficiaries in the textile sector in Karur during his visit and said they were satisfied with the contributions of PUM experts.
PUM experts had helped the units in energy saving and textile design areas.
Mr. Brouwer disclosed that PUM had planned 75 missions during 2008 for the south and western parts of India.
The regional PUM representatives based in the South and West of India in Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Kochi would coordinate the missions, he said.
