Three hostels for girls inaugurated

Tuticorin: Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare A. Tamilarasi said that a total of Rs.492.08 crore, constituting 77 per cent of the budgetary allocation to the department for the current financial year, had been earmarked to impart education to Adi Dravidars and Tribals in the State.
Inaugurating three new hostels for girl students from Adi Dravidar community at Chillankulam near here on Tuesday, she said scholarships and education fee concessions were being offered. Besides, prize money schemes had been introduced to encourage the Adi Dravidar students, both at the state and district levels, to score high marks in public examinations.
K. Prabhavati, District Adi Dravidar Welfare Officer said that with the opening of three new hostels, the total number of hostels for students of Adi Dravidar community had gone up to 51 (28 for boys and 23 for girls).
A total of 13 Adi Dravidar hostels including the newly opened ones at K. Kailasapuram, Kovilpatti and M.K.N. Nagar, were functioning from rented premises.
These too were planned to be shifted to government owned buildings before the end of the next financial year.
Sources said that presently, 3,271 students were being accommodated in the 48 hostels. The three new hostels have a capacity to accommodate a total of 150 students.
Welfare assistance
Ms. Tamilarasi along with Minister for Animal Husbandry P. Geetha Jeevan distributed welfare assistance to 83 beneficiaries, at the function. District Revenue Officer P. Anbarasu, Revenue Divisional Officer (Kovilpatti sub-division) Sudarmani Pandian and senior officials of various departments were present.
