News Analysis
In a report “Farmers term MSP for red gram unscientific” (Karnataka edition – Bangalore, December 12, 2007), the third paragraph was: “The MSP fixed by the government for red gram also does not follow the recommendations made by the National Agriculture Commission headed by M.S. Swaminathan. The commission had said that the MSP fixed by the government should be at least 50 per cent more than the waited average cost of production and the net take home income of farmers should be in comparable to those of civil servants.” “Waited average” should have been “weighted average”. Also, “should be in comparable to” should have been “should be comparable to”.
In a report “Registrar of Companies to weed out passive firms” (City edition – Chennai, December 11, 2007, page 5), the sixth paragraph was: “MCA 21, the e-governance project of the Ministry of Company Affairs, launched 18 months ago, had stabilised. It enabled the Registrar to deliver 70 per cent of services within 24 hours. ‘After sorting out issues like stamp duty and resubmission of documents, we would like to issue Certificate of Incorporation and share certificates within four hours,’ [Registrar of Companies, Chennai] Mr. Harish said.” Mr. Harish clarifies that “share certificates” should have been “charge certificates”. The caption of a standalone photograph (“Newscape” page, December 10, 2007) was: “In all glory — Calm Retreat: Just the perfect setting for a ride on the placid Chilka lake in Bhubaneswar.” It was an editing error. It is not the Chilika lake (it is spelt this way), but the Ekamra lake in Bhubaneshwar. (The original caption was “Bhubaneswar, Orissa … As usual tourists throng the lake in winter but no migratory birds in the vicinity ….”). The Chilika lake, which is India’s largest brackish water lagoon with an estuarine character, is not in Bhubaneshwar. It is in the districts of Puri, Khurda and Ganjam of Orissa. A 32 km long, narrow, outer channel connects the lagoon to the Bay of Bengal. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
