BAGHDAD: Up to 40 persons were killed and 45 others wounded when three car bombs went off in the Shia city of Amara in Iraq on Wednesday, a local police source said. The three car bombs exploded in quick succession, shortly after 10 a.m. local time, in a parking lot and a market in Dijla street in central Amara, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The toll could rise, as ambulances and civilian trucks continued to evacuate the victims to the city hospitals, he said. A second car bomb went off outside the parking lot, where many persons had gathered to examine the damage from the first blast. Shortly after, the third car bomb detonated near the gate of a movie theatre in the thoroughfare. In a separate incident, a bomb went off near a school in Kirkuk, 250 km north of Baghdad, wounding a civilian. — Xinhua
