Absence of defence counsel in Phoolan case irks court
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: A Sessions court hearing the Phoolan Devi murder case on Wednesday expressed its anger against the defence lawyer who had been coming late for every hearing.
Additional Sessions Judge V. K. Bansal sent a copy of the order to the Bar Council of Delhi in which he had deferred the hearing to December 17 after defence counsel Mukesh Kalia kept the court waiting for one hour.
The court pointed out that Kalia, counsel for main accused Sher Singh Rana, had been coming late in every hearing and that this was something that the Council needed to be informed about.
On Wednesday, the court was supposed to record the cross-examination of Kalicharan, the then personal assistant of the slain MP. However, Rana requested the court to not begin cross-examination as his counsel had not yet arrived. The court waited for nearly an hour following which the Judge deferred the matter for Monday next. Kalicharan had earlier been doing flip-flops over whether he had seen main accused Rana firing at the bandit queen-turned-politician Phoolan Devi.
