NEW DELHI: The Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday denied reports in a section of the media that an airport was being built at Amravati in Maharashtra for the convenience of President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, ignoring the interests of farmers of the Vidarbha region. “Misleading”“The reports are factually incorrect and misleading. The proposed new airport is one of the various initiatives of the Maharashtra government for the development of Vidarbha region and not aimed at the convenience of the President,” a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said in a statement here. “The President is very much concerned about the farmers’ issues in the country, particularly of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra from where farmers’ suicides were reported,” the spokesperson said. The President has already advised the Central government for an early solution to matters related to debt relief of farmers. “The President always insists on giving top priority to the progress and welfare of farmers,” the spokesperson said in the statement.
