Why an elevated Metro corridor, asks High Court

Staff Reporter

“Is it due to time constraint or financial factor?”

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Centre the rationale behind going in for an elevated Metro rail line between Central Secretariat and Badarpur here.

A Division of the Court comprising Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Veena Birbal asked the Centre to file a reply to its query within two weeks.

The Bench passed the direction on a bunch of petitions by residents’ welfare associations of some South Delhi colonies challenging the construction of the elevated Metro line on the ground that it would impinge upon their privacy.

The route

The proposed elevated link, among others, will pass through Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Kailash Colony, Jungpura and Kalkaji.

The residents of colonies between Jangpura and Kalkaji also expressed their apprehension that the proposed link would damage the green cover in their areas, in addition to adding to the noise pollution.

When the motto of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was to provide underground Metro rail service then why an elevated line?

“Is it due to time constraint or financial factor?” the Bench asked.

It could be understood if it was passing through an undeveloped colony.

When the line was passing through developed colonies and the essence of the project was to provide underground rail service, why has the DMRC gone for an elevated line? the Bench asked.
