IN PROGRESS: Work on the four-laning of the Puducherry-Tindivanam national highway under way. PUDUCHERRY: Work to convert the 38-km-long Puducherry-Tindivanam national highway into a four lane has commenced. The National Highways Authority of India has assigned the work to the Pondicherry Tindivanam Tollway Limited, a joint venture of Maytas Infras Limited and Nagarjuna Construction Company, to develop the road on a Build Operate Transfer (BoT) basis. The company would invest Rs. 285 crore and manage the traffic along the route for 30 years, an official with the firm told The Hindu. He said the work had commenced and would be completed by July, 2010. The stretch would have two bypasses, one starting from Thiruchirambalam to the point near Auroville police station and the other from Thailapuram to Kondhamur. The company planned to have a toll gate near the Auroville police station. The process was on to acquire land at Pulichapallam, Kondamur, Aruvapakkam and Therkkunam for the expanding the road. If the land for the purpose was handed over fast, the project would be completed ahead of schedule, he said.
