THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Aakashagopuram, a Malayalam film based on the legendary play Master Builder authored by the world renowned theatre personality Henry Ibsen, is ready for release, its director K.P. Kumaran has said. This film also has a rare distinction that it is one of the few international co-productions made in Malayalam. Completely shot in London and its suburbs, the film has Mohanlal as its lead character. Bharat Gopi, Sreenivasan, Manoj K Jayan, Nithya and Geethu Mohandas also act in the film. Talking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) here, Kumaran said the print of the film would reach here next week. The film would be released in theatres in February. There would be national and international releases for the film. He said the film was about the angst of a legendary artist, unravelling the brighter and darker sides of his personality. “Unlike many of the other plays of Ibsen that deal with social issues, Master Build er is a powerful psychological play written by him in his later years. The play even has some surrealistic elements. I have tried to retain the basic character of the play, and the film is an adaptation of the play,” he said. Santhosh Thundiyil did the cinematography for the film while the music was by John Altman who had done the music for the Titanic. Kumaran’s films Athithi, Rugmini and Thotram had won national and international recognitions.
