Port-centric development augurs well for State, says official

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The State can look forward to a manufacturing sector, supported by better supply chain linkages and logistics, thereby ushering in industries in the import-process-export sector, once new Port-centred developments begin.

These emerging activities will require Kochi to invest around Rs.8,000 crore in infrastructure. But this will generate job opportunities in a spectrum ranging from skill-based manual jobs to knowledge-based vocations, said C. Unnikrishnan, Deputy Secretary, Cochin Port Trust.

He was making a presentation at a seminar on the ‘Role of Cochin Port in the Economic and Industrial Development of Kerala’ here as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sir Robert Bristow Memorial Mutual Benefit Fund.

The International Container Transshipment Terminal will facilitate access to mother vessels slashing freight cost for exporters. So, they will be more competitive and can adhere to strict time-schedules and bag more orders, said the paper.

The new port-centred developments will also result in better management of logistics, transport cost and inventory.
