Panchayat working in coordination with Health Department Fogging and spraying operations being conducted THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Ranni-Perinad grama panchayat in Pathanamthitta district has launched a mosquito eradication drive with the support of the Health Department to prevent another attack of the chikungunya fever which struck the area after the Sabarimala festival last year. According to panchayat president Remani Ammal, the drive has been launched to rule out the chances of another attack of the fever, which “crippled the economy of the panchayat last year.” Symptoms of the fever were first detected in Chittar and Ranni-Perinad panchayats and there were complaints that local self-government institutions, especially grama panchayats, had failed to rise to the occasion to initiate steps to remove garbage and take preventive measures in time. The panchayat is working in coordination with the health authorities to prevent another outbreak, thje panchayat president said. While taking up initiatives in tune with the Clean Kerala project launched by the Local Self-Government Department, the panchayat launched the drive on Thursday to eradicate mosquito menace within a month. The panchayat has started fogging and spraying using a biomedical spray, Quitmos, made of natural oils. The Director of Health Services had granted permission to the Delhi-based company which produces the bio-medical mosquito repellent and spray to conduct a detailed reconnaissance and study in two wards of the panchayat. After completing the pilot project, the drive has been extended all over the panchayat. The decision was made after considering the use of the product in Cherthala, Alappuzha, Mavelikara and Haripad following the last fever outbreak.
