Industrial houses may take over sick sugar mills

Patna: Top industrial houses of the country have evinced interest in the take-over of 15 sick sugar mills of the State Government and turn them into viable units.

Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who also holds the Finance portfolio, replying to the second supplementary budget and related appropriation bill totalling over Rs 3005 crore for the year 2007-08, said top industrial houses including the Reliance group of industries, Tata Chemicals, Bharat Petroleum and other top sugar mill owners have submitted tenders for the purpose.

On lease basis

Mr. Modi said out of 15 closed sugar mills eight would be handed over to the private parties on lease basis by January end and the land of rest seven would be handed over to the industrial houses to set up industries of their choice provided they met State Government’s conditions.

He said majority of the industrial houses have shown interest in setting up sugar units producing ethanol and bagasse-based power units.

The Deputy Chief Minister said World Bank had cleared Rs 800 crore development loan to the Sstate at a very low rate of interest and could be used by the Bihar government for the development of any sector. PTI
