Rs. 14.73 crore to promote drip irrigation system

VILLUPURAM: A sum of Rs 14.73 crore has been allotted to Villupuram district for promoting drip irrigation system, according to Jagmohan Singh Raj, Commissioner (Horticulture).
Presiding over a review meeting here on Thursday, Mr. Raj said that he had come here to ascertain the views of sugarcane growers and those raising horticultural crops on going for drip irrigation and on the implementation of the scheme.
With the allotted money, 5,258 hectares in the district would be brought under drip irrigation.
He further said that under the National Horticulture Movement, it had been proposed to raise mango, banana, cashew and coco on 2,500 ha with an allocation of Rs 2.54 crore.
For the farmers who would raise these cash crops through drip irrigation, 75 per cent subsidy would be given, the Commissioner said. Joint Directors S. Mohtan (Horticulture) and Daniel Paul (Agriculture), and Assistant Director (Horticulture) S.Amirthalingam participated.
