Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday joined issue with the Congress and the Pattali Makkal Katchi for stating that the party had allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party to oppose the Bill to convert the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) into an autonomous institute. Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the party V. Perumal and State committee member T. Murugan at a press conference said that the party had joined hands with the BJP only to oppose certain provisions in the Bill which were “anti-people and anti-working class.” The party would oppose the Bill till the demands were incorporated in the legislation, they said. Responding to the statement of AICC general secretary V. Narayanasamy that the CPI(M) had “joined hands with the BJP to oppose legislation that could have helped the territory,” Mr. Murugan said that it was Mr. Narayanasamy who had first opposed the autonomy move. He also challenged Mr. Narayanasamy to bring out a white paper on the amount of money he had spent from Members of Parliament Local Area Development fund in all the constituencies of the Union Territory. The CPI(M) leaders said that it was the PMK which had shared power with the BJP and they did not want to take lessons on secularism from them.
