MP to make a representation to Governor

Maharashtra Government’s move lauded

BIDAR: Narsinghrao Suryavanshi, MP, has said that if the State Government announces minimum support price (MSP) for sugarcane it will bring relief to farmers and sugar factories.

Since, sugarcane is a State subject, it is the responsibility of the Government to initiate steps to help both farmers and factories, he said. The Government should take a balanced decision so that neither farmers nor sugar factories suffer losses, he added.

Speaking to The Hindu after meeting sugarcane farmers, who are protesting in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday, Mr. Suryavanshi lauded Maharashtra Government for assisting farmers by announcing MSP.

He said both farmers and sugar factories in that State had benefited after the support price was announced. Mr. Suryavanshi assured the protesting farmers that he would make a representation to Governor Rameshwar Thakur and apprise him of the problems faced by them. A memorandum addressed to the Governor had been submitted by the farmers.

He pointed out that sugarcane farmers all over the country were facing problems and the issue was not confined to Karnataka alone. Mr. Suryavanshi said that sugarcane farmers demanded more money for their produce while the factories said that they were not in a position to meet their demands. Later, farmers held discussion with him on levy for sugar.

The farmers also demanded uniform policy for maintaining stability in sugar price in the market, exemption of sugarcane purchase tax, permission to export sugar and ban on imports. Meanwhile, the protest by the farmers, who are pressing for fulfilment of their demands, entered 11th day on Thursday.
