“Demolition of slums be stopped”

Slum dwellers pass a six-point resolution

Better education facility sought for poor kids

NEW DELHI: Slum dwellers and the members of the Delhi Shramik Sangathan have demanded that the Government come up with a law that would help in improving the working conditions of women in unorganised sectors. They have also demanded that the demolitions of slums be stopped.

Passing a six-point resolution on the occasion of United Nations Human Rights Day this past Monday, the representatives of the DSS demanded that the Government come up with a law to ensure social security for women domestic workers which should take care of regulation of employment, conditions of work, fair wages and proper working hour.

Further, apart from immediate stopping of demolitions of slums, the resolution also demanded their in situ up-gradation as per the provisions in the Master Plan for Delhi 2021.

The slum residents should be consulted before going for flat rehabilitation as proposed in the Master Plan, the resolution demanded.

It was also demanded that the Government improve the infrastructure of the schools run by them.

The resolution pointed out that the children of the poor and those in the low-income population attended schools where the quality of the education had deteriorated over the years.

Poor PDS system

The resolution further said the public distribution system has been totally corrupted by the politicians, shopkeepers and department’s officials. Therefore, all the families living in slum areas should be treated as belonging to below poverty line and should be given BPL cards, it demanded.
