Theft accused let off

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 19-year-old domestic help, who was accused of theft by her employer, has been released by a city court here after she admitted to her guilt under the plea bargain scheme which makes it possible for commutation of sentence, or complete waiver, for an accused if he or she admits his guilt.

Metropolitan Magistrate Devender Kumar Jangala, in a recent order, sentenced Nikki to five-month imprisonment after she admitted her offence that could have attracted a maximum punishment of seven years.

Since Nikki had already undergone imprisonment for more than five months, she was released.

Nikki was arrested in July this year following complaint from her employer Narender Kishan Malhotra, a resident of Vikaspuri, that she had stolen certain items from his house.

Mr. Malhotra gave a written undertaking to the court that he was ready for a settlement without compensation.

The court also took into consideration the fact that the accused was of a young age.
