Govt. to tap energy from non-conventional sources

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Government has embarked upon a plan to generate 1500 mw electricity from non-conventional sources to cover up the deficit of energy needs during the next four years. It would also ensure the power remains affordable, while the transmission and distributions (T&D) losses are brought down to the minimum levels.

This was revealed by the State’s Minister for Science and Technology, Bikram Singh Majithia, who was talking to reporters after he presided over the ceremony where multi-national company Suzlon Gujarat Wind Park Ltd signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) for the setting up of two wind driven power projects of 50 mw each in Hoshiarpur and Muktsar districts at combined estimated cost of Rs.500 crore.

Aiming at power surplus

The Minister said that the Punjab was in for exploiting all natural resources so that state turns power surplus in next 4 years. Responding to a question, he said that the potential of wind run power plants could not be realised as previous efforts failed the feasibility trials because the wind mills’ staffs were just 30 to 40 meters.

Through latest international technology, Suzlon, which would target a height of 70 to 80 meters, is expected to return major results, which after suitable amendments would be replicated across the State. The projects are expected to reach their critical stage of generation with six to eight months’ time.

Mr. Majithia added that the State Government was committed to develop the renewable energy resources.

He informed that PEDA was engaged in developing Biomass Power Projects, Co-generation and Micro Hydel Projects. Major efforts were being made to harness solar energy.
