Chandy says violence disrupting development Congress campaign against violence to continue’ THALASSERY: The three-day ‘Shanti Yatra’ organised by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) concluded in Thalassery on Thursday night. Large number of Congress activists and supporters gathered here to receive the foot marchers led by Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala. The march which started from Payyannur on December 11 was scheduled to conclude here at 5 p.m. at a public function. But the valedictory function was delayed for more than two hours as the march entered the town only at around 7.30 p.m. The function was inaugurated by Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran. According to local Congress leaders who organised the public function here, the party leaders and activists were overwhelmed by the public response to the march organised to mobilise public support for the party’s campaign for peace in the district. Party activists and supporters as well as activists of its allies gathered at every point along the route to greet the marchers. Receptions to the ‘Shanti Yatra’, which started from Kannur at 8.30 a.m., were arranged at Nadal at 12 p.m. and at Dharmadom in the evening. Party State-level leaders and functionaries were also participating in the march along with hundreds of Congress activists who joined the march along the route through which it passed. Mr. Chandy and Mr. Chennithala, who spoke at the receptions, accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of attempting to revive political violence in the district. Mr. Chandy said the people of the district were peace loving. The incidents of political violence were disrupting development in the district, he said. He said the CPI(M) was unleashing violence against activists of rival political parties in the district. Mr. Chandy said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had failed to ensure rule of law in the district. The Congress campaign against political violence would continue till lasting peace emerged in the district, he said. Mr. Chennithala blamed Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan for the disruption of peace in the district. Among the leaders who participated in the march were K. Sudhakaran, MLA, M.K. Raghavan, Rajmohan Unnithan, Mahila Congress president Shanimol Usman, and District Congress Committee (DCC) president P. Ramakrishnan.
