Child given acid, admitted to hospital

KANCHEEPURAM: One-and-half-year-old girl child Sandhya of Kancheepuram was admitted to Children’s Hospital, Egmore, in Chennai, in a serious condition after her mother reportedly gave her acid by mistake here on Wednesday.
Enquiries reveal that Sandhya’s mother, Bhavani, asked for gripe water at a provisions store near her residence on Kamakshi Amman Sannadhi Street on December 12 as Sandhya suffered from indigestion problem.
The child suffered burns in her mouth and fainted as soon as Bhavani administered the acid. Immediately, the child was rushed to a hospital here from where she was referred to Children’s Hospital.
In the evening, a complaint was lodged by Sandhya’s parents against the provisions store owner, Perumal was arrested by the police.
Twenty-three bundles of scratch-type lottery tickets were seized from near a goods transport booking office on Railway Road here on Wednesday.
According to police, the parcels booked in the name of a mobile phone shop owner at Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai district reached the lorry booking office here on Tuesday from New Delhi.
On receiving the information about the parcel, a mobile shop owner sent two persons to Kancheepuram to receive the parcels and bring them to Vandavasi using a mini-van.
Meanwhile, the police received a tip-off that lottery tickets were being smuggled through a particular road transport company.
A team of plain-clothed sleuths raided the lorry booking office, seized the lottery ticket bundles and arrested the two persons engaged in transporting the bundles to Vandavasi.
