Heavy rain lashes Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: Several parts of the Cauvery delta region of the district is experiencing heavy rain since Thursday.
Low-lying areas were inundated in several places, including tsunami-hit coastal villages in and around Velankanni, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuturai, Poompuhar and Porayar, experienced heavy rain till evening.
Fishermen on the 188-km coast in the district did not venture into the sea following a warning issued by the meteorology department.
A top official of the agriculture department told The Hindu that the rain was timely and beneficial to the standing samba and thaladi paddy crops raised in about 1.32 lakh hectares.
The crops were in crucial flowering and milching stages in many parts of the district except in some pockets of Mayiladuturai, where the crops would come for harvest by month-end.
