Government urged to stop work on park close to sea
Staff Reporter
Nagercoil: Environmentalists here have urged the Government not to develop a recreational park in close proximity to the sea at Kanyakumari.
Speaking to The Hindu, the chairman of the Conservation of Nature Trust, R.S. Lal Mohan, said that the development was against all norms stipulated in the Coastal Zone Regulation notification.
Even the Vohra Commission Amendment of the CRZ notification made it clear that no development should take place within the first 50 meters of high tide line.
However, officials of Kanyakumari Town Panchayat have leased out the 150 meters in length and 50 meters in width area to a private party on a three -ear lease for Rs.16,000 per annum.
The lessee has been allowed to develop the land and put up a snack bar.
Though they were not allowed to make any permanent structure, the developers had been allowed to regulate access to beach.
Accusing that new platforms had been put up by the lessee, this was a violation of memorandum of understanding between panchayat and the developer.
The view of the sea has also been blocked by grills erected along the platform.
They said that access to the beach was denied owing to the establishment of the recreation park.
