High incidence of malaria spurs officials into action

D. Chandra Bhaskar Rao

KHAMMAM: The use of insecticide treated bed nets has finally been opted for as part of the vector control strategies in the malaria endemic pockets of Khammam district. The Medical and Health Department has taken up distribution of the nets in a big way in the tribal pockets in view of the high incidence of malaria cases and increasing number of malaria-related deaths. Over 10,000 nets have been given in the tribal pockets for distribution in the habitations in the grip of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.

As many as 4,184 nets have already been distributed and another 6,300 nets sent to various tribal PHCs. The pre-treated insecticide in the long term impregnated nets would last almost the life span of the net. Officials say the use of these nets is recommended and hence moves are afoot to make them available in the required number.
