dated December 14, 1957: Foreign policy

The Rajya Sabha, on December 13, unanimously endorsed the Government’s foreign policy after Prime Minister Nehru gave a 50-minute reply to the earlier debate. Mr. Nehru reiterated that India’s policy was “a strictly practical policy, the only practical policy which might bring results. The results might be delayed occasionally but it avoids ill-results.” If some people thought that India’s policy was too idealistic, it would really be those who lived in a realm of imagination divorced from facts. The policy was strictly practical. He would venture to say that other countries, great and small, were bound to come to this policy of non-alignment because the only alternative to that policy was the cold war.
