This Day That Age
In India, the “Iron Horse” made its debut on April 16, 1853. It was a clumsy horse steaming chugging and hooting train at less than 10 miles an hour and covering the 21 mile distance from Bombay to Thana in two and a half hours. For the first time India had smokeless electrically driven trains on February 3, 1925. The Bombay Thana line has a special place in the history of railways in India. Not only did the first steam train run on this line but also in 1923, work commenced on the electrification of this section and the first electric train from Bombay VT to Kurla ran on it on Feb 3, 1925, a distance of nine and a half miles. Electrification work on the Madras suburban line commenced in 1928 and the Madras Beach Tambaram section was electrified in 1931. The first electric train ran on May 11, 1931.
