On Moditva

Justices Tarun Chatterjee and Dalveer Bhandari have taken the right decision by rejecting the Gujarat government’s submission on Narendra Modi’s speech in Mangrol. From Mr. Modi’s past actions, it is clear that it was not a political speech. It was fabricated for exhorting the people to resort to violence. Mr. Modi’s remarks constitute a gross contempt of court. L.K Advani’s support for Mr. Modi is hardly convincing. As for Bal Thackeray’s appeal for a strong Hindutva proponent to fight “Islamic aggression,” it takes little thinking to understand that the real aggressors are Hindu fundamentalist groups — it is not Islam.

V.P. Sreenivasan,

Bangalore

This refers to Sonia Gandhi’s remark that Gujarat’s rulers are merchants of death and Mr. Modi’s response. It is we, the people, who are to blame for the state of affairs because we have evolved and tolerated such political culture over the years. Politicians like Mr. Modi will not fight a single election without anti-Muslim rhetoric. Mr. Modi must tell us who were the merchants of death who perpetrated the 2002 genocide with state support. The Chief Minister should understand that with or without him, Gujarat will prosper.

Velavartipati Vachaspati,

Ongole
