Prohibitory orders on Howrah college campus

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr.PC were clamped on the premises of the Bengal Engineering and Science University in Shibpur, Howrah, on Thursday following disturbances involving two groups of students.

Personnel of the Rapid Action Force of the State police had been deployed and classes suspended indefinitely, a university official said.

Trouble has been brewing in the deemed university since earlier this week. The situation took a turn for the worse on Thursday when the supporters of rival unions clashed.

A lecturer was seriously injured after being hit by a brick while trying to separate the two groups, a police official said.

Students have been asked to vacate their hostels.

Post-graduate students of the Students Federation of India called for a boycott of examinations on Monday in protest against the assault on one of their leaders.
