MUMBAI: An institute for teaching cyber forensic science has been launched here. It will conduct courses in detecting digital evidence, computer crime combat and cyber crime law enforcement. The National Institute of E-forensic (NIEF), affiliated to Oregon University, United States, offers certificate courses in techno-legal cyber security, diploma in cyber law and advanced courses in applied decryption, internet forensics and Windows forensics, said institute CEO Sachin Pandey. “The country needs 20,000 e-forensic experts to book cyber criminals. Though high-tech equipment for digging out cyber evidence is available, the manpower is in short supply,” Dr. Pandey told reporters here on Wednesday. He said cyber crime was rising at an alarming rate with the increased use of computers in the country. “Hackers had broken into 2,340 websites till May-end, against 5,200 break-ins during the entire 2006,” he said. Cyber crimes include online credit card scams, e-mail related crimes such as spoofing, bombing, sending threatening e-mails, defamatory mails and frauds, phishing attacks (criminal acquisition of sensitive information like user IDs, passwords, credit card details etc.) on companies, software piracy, SMS hacking, cloning of mobiles, etc. The NIEF has a toll-free helpline (1800-209-6789) to offer free consultation and guidance to help victims in getting the criminals nabbed. The NIEF had one functional lab and was in the process of setting up three more.
